Thoughtful gifting matters
Gifts express our feelings and knowledge regarding the person. Good gifts may convey the concern and love of the sender, but sometimes, we just don’t know what to give our loved ones. So, here’s what not to gift this Christmas.
Pets
Pets may appear to be a sweet gift but it’s a major responsibility. If your loved can’t care for a pet, or doesn’t know how to care for one, it could be a major liability. Receiving a pet as a gift can be stressful to the recipient while most of the given pets end up in shelters. If the person loves animals, you can go for buying a pet book, donating to an animal shelter of their choice or even giving them a voucher for sitting pets if they own any.
Joke gifts
Although jokes and funny gifts may strike up a smile and a laugh, they’re usually not useful and can even offend your recipient. Avoid buying gifts that mean to play a prank on the recipient or are a novelty item or anything that is in a way mocking them. If you want a funny gift, try buying useful ones like that don’t offend the person.
Gift Cards of brands you don’t know or don’t go
This is quite common. It is, however, only useful if the recipient has an interest in the store or service that the gift card is for. Presenting a gift card to a brand you are not quite familiar with, it may end up not being used often or at all, and may end up being thrown away. There might be brands which are only available in Manila and not in Iloilo. If you want to give a gift card, the best gift card to give would be one of a popular online store or a universal card which you can use for anything. Better still, you can pair it with a compact and a very thoughtful gift.
Admission to areas that are not accessible every day
Things like event or show tickets or even trips can be great gifts, but only if the person is going to be able to use them. Giving out tickets without knowing their schedule or their choice can be a letdown. Why not a voucher to buy an activity of choice with them for him or her to select a date? Give it to them with a message as to why you feel that they might enjoy trying it. Or buy vouchers or coupons.
Personalizing your gifts
The first mistake people make when gifting is not personalizing. Knowing the recipient’s passion and likes can make a regular gift to be a special one. This is where the concept of gifting comes into play. A first edition of a book, a museum date, or a portrait are just some examples.
Think long-term
Gifts that can be put to use and enjoyed in the long run are the best ones to give. Objects that have some intrinsic value or are precious for some reason are usually more valued.
Add a personal touch
Such things as writing a note, using homemade products, or even wrapping the gift in a special way can go a long way in making the gift special.
Quality over quantity
One should give one good present rather than a number of useless ones. Emphasize on quality and relevance.
As much as we want to give the best gifts during the holiday season, there are some mistakes that we should avoid so that our gifts will be valued ~ like what not to gift this Christmas. The best gifts are those that are chosen with the recipient in mind which shows you really know what they like.
