MIBF 2019 returns with big surprises

The 40th edition of the MIBF is slated on September 11 - 15, 2019 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

THE Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) is among the biggest, most sought after and longest-running fairs in the country with a total of 150,000+ visitors in its five-day run.

The 40th edition of the MIBF is slated on September 11 – 15, 2019 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. The book fair visitors are regular visitors who have been attending for an average of five years and belong to the highly educated sector of the population.

The book fair has grown from three halls of SM Megamall Megatrade Hall to two floors of SMX Convention Center Manila.  Highlighting the event are seminars, workshops, book signings and co-located events such as Fandom Fest that equally attract huge crowds to the event

Running for almost four decades now, it has evolved from an event for the publishing industry and the academe to one of the most-awaited exhibitions for all sorts of readers.

The MIBF has become a gathering of sorts for bookworms of all ages and walks of life to celebrate the joys of reading and the knowledge each book brings about. It has also been providing a venue for the exchange of ideas amongst players in the publishing and academic industry.

Event-goers can expect various activities from the book fair such as the BOOK DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES (BDAP) conducting a workshop on Book Design entitled “F**k the 2019 Trends, Know your Design History and Techniques: Basic Book Design Tips” facilitated by multi-awarded book designer Karl Castro.

This will be held on September 11, 2019 (Wednesday) from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM during MIBF, at Meeting Room 7, SMX MOA.

Karl Castro has received recognition from the Philippine National Book Awards, Asian Publishing Awards, Adobo Design Awards, and the Philippine Graphic Design Awards. His design and creative direction for ABS-CBN Publishing’s Vault Magazine was hailed as among Asia’s best, winning an Excellence Award for Best Use of Design, Layout & Presentation at the Asian Publishing Awards. He is also the poster designer for renowned independent films like Lav Diaz’s Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan, Antoinette Jadaone’s That Thing Called Tadhana, Jade Castro’s Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington, and the Philippine release of Anthony Chen’s Ilo Ilo, all of which have been seen in major film festivals around the globe.

All BDAP members have one free slot for the workshpp. Non-BDAP members must pay a rate of P500.

Claudia Kaiser of Frankfurt Book Fair

Another event fair-goers can expect are the capacity building activities for the pre-Frankfurt Book Fair 2019. The National Book Development Board (NBDB) will conduct a talk about the latest trends in licensing. The speaker will be Ms. Claudia Kaiser of Frankfurt Book Fair. This will happen during MIBF, 12 September 2019, Thursday, 10am to 12nn at the Stage 2.

The event will talk more about the international and latest trends in licensing. 

Claudia Kaiser is the Vice President in Business Development of Frankfurt Book Fair. Today, she focuses in the Southeast Asia and South Asian markets. She was trained as a bookseller; she served as the editor for China Foreign Literature Publishing house and lived in China for more than 10 years. In 1998 she set up the German Book Information Centre by Frankfurt Book Fair in Beijing and became its first director.

PEPCON 4: PROVIDING KNOWLEDGE AND CONTENT FOR THE LEARNERS TODAY FROM PAGE TO SCREEN

On the same day, from 8AM to 5PM, Meeting Rooms 7, 8, and 9, the Philippine Educational Publishers’ Association’s (PEPA) will organize the upcoming PEPCON 4: PROVIDING KNOWLEDGE AND CONTENT FOR THE LEARNERS TODAY FROM PAGE TO SCREEN

Attendees expect to learn how to get the context of learners, how they learn and how educators need to respond to this and how educational publishers as partners in education need to respond to the learners’ needs.

Meanwhile, the Overseas Publishers’ Representatives Association of the Philippines (OPRAP) presents, “So you think you can write? Will it sell?” seminar that will expound on this interest of local writers.

The seminar will focus on providing Filipino writers more information on what foreign literary agents are looking for, a list of requirements they need to submit, and first-hand step-by-step guidance on how to accomplish these requirements by their speaker, Ms. Tarie Sabido, on September 14.
