Iloilo City is gearing up for its 85th Charter Day Celebration, set to take place throughout the month of August. This year’s event is themed “Forging Stronger Ties in the Community,” with a focus on strengthening public-private partnerships.
Mayor Jerry Treñas stated that there will be no lavish Mayor’s Ball this year, but a simple dinner recognizing the city’s top taxpayers. He pointed out that this year’s Charter Logo, depicting a handshake covered by a heart shape, symbolizes the importance of active partnerships in the City of Love.
“I think it’s important to celebrate where the city started,” Treñas said. “What is unique about Iloilo is it’s a conglomeration of municipalities that is why all our districts have their own plaza, church and government center. It is also the reason why we redevelop the plazas as place for people to go to,” Treñas added.
Iloilo City Charter Day is an annual event that celebrates the anniversary of Iloilo’s incorporation as a city way back in 1937. It will include a variety of activities, including tourism-related contests, a river cleanup, tree-planting, sports tournaments, and an urban gardening project.
The event will also feature a number of workshops and seminars on topics such as anti-tobacco advocacy, tax campaigns, and job fairs. Additionally, there will be discounts on shopping, dining, and accommodations for those who attend the event.

It remains to be seen what other festivities the city has planned for its charter month, but Iloilo certainly has a lot to celebrate.
