How Earth Day came about in the Philippines

The Philippines, known for its stunning natural beauty, has taken a significant step towards prioritizing the environment by commemorating Earth Day every year. Under Presidential Proclamation 1481, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo initiated the observance of Earth Day in the country. It was a momentous occasion that showed the Philippine government’s commitment to protecting the planet and its natural resources.

The declaration of Earth Day holds great significance for the nation as it signifies a call for action toward environmental conservation efforts. As a developing nation, the Philippines is exposed to several environmental challenges. Rapid industrialization, unsustainable land-use practices, and lack of proper waste management systems have severely impacted the environment, leading to unforeseen consequences such as air and water pollution, deforestation, and depletion of natural resources.

Earth Day allows the nation to come together and participate in activities that promote environmental awareness, sustainability, and conservation. Citizens, local communities, and organizations in the Philippines experience various programs, including tree planting, recycling campaigns, coastal cleanups, and awareness drives, to ensure a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.

Moreover, Presidential Proclamation 1482 declared April the Month of the Planet Earth in the Philippines. The month-long celebration provides a platform to reinforce the importance of environmental issues. Further, it creates opportunities for the public to learn how to contribute to the planet’s conservation.

6 things you should do in honor of Earth Day

The 21st century has the word “technology” emblazoned in our everyday life, making it harder for us to appreciate the true stars in the sphere; forests, oceans, and mountains.

Guilty of ignoring mother nature for our gaming consoles and social media platforms, it’s time to show love to all of nature’s gifts.

So, while we strongly believe that protecting the environment shouldn’t only be a one-day event and that mother nature should be honored every day in every way, we can start creating habits on “Earth Day.”

Take a breather on the 22nd of April, give time to appreciate the great outdoors, and celebrate together with the world. Here are the 6 green ways to cheer for “Earth Day.”

Honor the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse Recycle

This triple R mantra is pivotal in cutting down the amount of waste we dispose of daily.

 The mechanics are fairly simple!

1.       Reduce the amount of trash we generate

2.       Reuse items that you would’ve thrown out, by finding other ways to use them

3.       Recycle something old and worthless into something new and useful

By keeping it real with the 3 R’s, you’re not only saving resources and money, but you’re also helping reduce the waste in the landfills and, consequently, the space required for these garbage sites.

Save energy

Energy makes everyday life maneuvering easy, fun, and convenient. From preserving food, washing clothes, and playing music, it provides a wide range of insurmountable importance.

But on Earth Day, make good for the environment and turn off the lights and electronics. Do the seemingly small things that will result in bringing down gas emissions.

Not only will you keep mother nature happy, but you’re also cutting down utility bills.

Car free

Did you know that cars consume energy before hitting the road?

Car production alone leaves a giant environmental-damaging footprint. Plastic, rubber, paint, and steel; all these raw materials make up your shiny car.

So, we suggest that on “Earth Day,” you go car-free. Take a hike or pedal your bike to reach your destination.

You’re not only building healthy muscle, but it’s also healthy for our beloved environment too.

Plant a Tree or grow a garden

Plants need carbon dioxide to do photosynthesis. Yes, it’s the same carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas contributing to global climate change.

By growing a tree around a garden, you’re reducing the amount of carbon dioxide and reusing it for more useful ways—how cool is that!

Be a better grocery shopper

When it’s time to go shopping, the thing that you must carry with you aside from your wallet is a reusable grocery bag.

Keeping it clear with plastic bags enormously drops the number of plastics manufactured worldwide. This is a straightforward act that reaches a thousandfold.

Enjoy nature!

Keep away from your various screens and catch a glimpse of the verdant side.

Chill at the beach, take a hike in the mountains, or have a picnic in the park, and find time to enjoy the thrilling wonders of nature. You’d be surprised how comfortingly pleasing it is to your physical, emotional, and mental well-being to be in the view of nature.
